Longer entries

The diary

The rest of this site is practical. These entries are the longer notes I made while reading about the place, kept here because they explain why the resort and the beaches look the way they do.

  1. A dune-season calendar

Month by month at Grand Beach, from the first migrating birds to the sand sculptures and the February ski trails, with every date from a provincial source.

  2. When trains ran to the beach

Fur brigades, a colonel's prophecy, a railway resort with a dance hall and a carousel, and the September in 1961 when the trains stopped.

  3. An art-deco hotel on Highway 59

Why a resort in the Manitoba bush is named after a beach in Miami, and what the place looks like inside.

How I keep this diary

Every entry is dated by the day I wrote it, and every fact in it links to the page I read. I do not write about stays I did not have, conversations I did not hear, or guests who do not exist. When a source is promotional, such as the resort itself or the province's tourism site, I say so in the text.

The diary will grow as the seasons do. The next entries I want to write are about the plovers in June and the ski trails in February, once the province publishes its 2027 dates.
