A summer plan, hour by hour

Two days at the lake, planned on paper

This is the weekend I would build around South Beach in July: one short beach on arrival, one long beach day, the pool twice, and nothing that needs a reservation except the room.

Day one: Friday

  1. 13:00

Leave Winnipeg. Print the park vehicle permit before you go; a three-day casual permit is $16.50 in 2026 and covers the whole weekend.

  2. 14:30

Patricia Beach. Picnic, a swim within your depth, a walk along the 2.5 km of beach.

  3. 17:00

Check in at South Beach. Rooms are guaranteed ready by 6 p.m., so this is the safe side of the window.

  4. 17:30

The pool. The west-facing windows should be doing their best work in the evening.

  5. 19:00

Supper at Mango's, outside the peak if you can manage it.

  6. 21:00

Adults to the Blue Dolphin for the Friday band; families back to the pool, which stays family-friendly until ten.

Day two: Saturday

  1. 8:00

Breakfast buffet at The Palms, or a coffee and muffin from the 24-hour café to eat in the car.

  2. 9:00

North on Highway 59 and west on PTH 12 to Grand Beach. Early, because the province says more than 20,000 visitors may arrive on a hot, sunny weekend.

  3. 9:45

Wild Wings trail, one kilometre through the marsh, while the birds are active.

  4. 11:00

The Boardwalk from the Locomotive Kiosk, then the beach. Swim within the marked area; never in the channel.

  5. 15:00

Spirit Rock trail, 1.1 km, for the lake view and the glacial boulders.

  6. 17:00

Back to the resort. Hot tub, then shower off the sand.

  7. 19:30

The Palms dinner buffet runs until 9 on Saturdays, or Mango's. If a ballroom concert is on, doors open at 6:30.

Day three: Sunday morning

  1. 8:00

The Palms breakfast buffet, the last of the week, until 11:30.

  2. 10:00

    A last swim. Pack.

  3. 12:00

    Check-out, or 1 p.m. if you booked a package with late check-out.

  4. 13:00

Home down Highway 59, or one more hour on the sand at Patricia Beach first.

What this plan assumes

A car, summer weather, and that you are happy to let a casino hotel be a place to sleep and swim. If the weather turns, the plan shrinks to the pool, the arcade and the Blue Dolphin, which is still a weekend. If you want the same thing in January, the winter version swaps the beach for ski trails.
