The far end of the road

Victoria Beach and Elk Island

Beyond Grand Beach, Highway 59 ends up at Victoria Beach, a resort municipality the South Beach site puts about 100 km north of Winnipeg. Offshore to the north lies Elk Island, a provincial park you can only reach by boat.

Victoria Beach

Type
Rural Municipality of Victoria Beach, a resort municipality
Where
South-eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg, about 100 km north of Winnipeg (resort's nearby page)
History
The municipality dates its original subdivisions to 1912 (Sunset Boulevard) and 1917 (Vehicle Restricted Area)
Warning
King Edward Beach: strong, dangerous undertow; stay away from the buoy line

The resort describes Victoria Beach as home to some of the finest beaches in Manitoba. The municipality's own website is mostly for residents and cottagers: council, permits, water service, a police board, and a page about a Vehicle Restricted Area that it dates to 1917. I did not find a plain-language visitor guide to how that area works today, so I will not explain rules I have not read. If you plan to drive in, check the municipality's site first.

  1. A safety note

The municipality warns swimmers at King Edward Beach to stay away from the buoy line, where a strong and dangerous undertow has caused several near-drownings in recent years. Rescuers have risked their own lives. Take that seriously.

  2. A shoreline note

The municipality also asks people not to climb on sand banks and to use stairs and paths to reach the beach, to prevent erosion.

  3. A golf note

Grand Pines Golf Course, on the resort's package list, is described by the resort as minutes away from both Grand Beach and Victoria Beach.

Elk Island Provincial Park

Manitoba Parks describes Elk Island as about 900 hectares, 32 km north of Grand Beach and 1.2 km from the mainland, accessible only by boat. It is almost without development, and parts of its shore have large boulders of different colours set in smooth white sand, which the province compares to a stone garden. Camping and open fires are not permitted on the island, and visitors are asked to pack out everything they bring.

History reaches it too: the province records that Colonel Wolseley's 1870 military expedition to the Red River camped on Elk Island. More on that in the history entry.

Is it worth the extra distance?

For one night at South Beach, probably not; Patricia Beach and Grand Beach are closer and better documented for visitors. For a longer stay, a day at the end of the road with a picnic and a golf round at Grand Pines on the way back makes a full day. Elk Island needs a boat and experience on a big lake, and the province warns that Lake Winnipeg is often affected by strong winds and large waves.
