Indoor water, open late

The tropical pool, the sauna and the rest of the wet side

On a cold day in Manitoba, this is the reason people book South Beach. The pool hall has a cascading waterfall, a sauna and a hot tub, and big windows facing west.

What the room looks like, from someone who saw it

The resort describes the pool in general words: ultimate luxury, comfort, a soothing tropical atmosphere. The more useful description comes from Travel Manitoba's 2024 article. Its writer singled out large columns covered in sparkly mosaic-like tile, a Mediterranean-bath feeling, and large west-facing picture windows through which the sun sets in the evening. At the far end there is a rain-shower feature with colour-changing lights. The water is shallow enough that she called the pool welcoming for families, and she wrote that the pool alone made a stay worthwhile for someone who does not gamble.

  1. 7:00 a.m.

Pool opens. Early swims are the quiet ones, before families come down after breakfast.

  2. Late afternoon

The time I would pick on a beach day: back from the sand, rinse off, half an hour in the hot tub before supper.

  3. Sunset

If the west-facing windows are as described, this is the hour to be in the water. On a long summer evening the low light may well arrive while families still have the pool.

  4. 10:00 p.m.

Adults only for the last hour, until 11 p.m. Parents who have just put children to bed upstairs get the pool to themselves.

Rules that matter

There is no lifeguard. That is common in hotel pools, but it means the adult rule for children under 12 is not a formality. Nobody else is watching. The sauna and hot tub are in the same area; the resort does not publish separate age rules for them, so I would treat them as adult spaces with children kept close.

The fitness centre

The resort says its fitness centre is in a secluded area, open 24 hours, with free weights, treadmills and other machines. Children under 16 need an adult. That is the full description; I cannot tell you the size or the brands of the machines.

The arcade

An arcade of video games, open from 11 a.m. to midnight, which the resort pitches as a place to bring the family for a friendly competition. It is separate from the casino and is the one indoor thing aimed squarely at children apart from the pool.

What is not here: the resort does not list a spa with treatments, an outdoor pool or a beach of its own. The beaches are a short drive north; see Patricia Beach and Grand Beach.
